2012 Scholarship Recipients Announced

In partnership with local chapters of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and the International Organization of Women Pilots, Inc. (aka 99s), the Hayward Air Rally is pleased to announce the winners of the four scholarships as Amanda Feriante, a home-schooled student in Fremont, CA; Kira Olson, of Foothill High School in Palo Cedro, CA; Tanner Parks, Weaverville Elementary School in Weaverville, CA; and Devan Simpkins, Cascade Middle School in Bend, OR.

2012 EAA Air Academy Summer Camp Scholarship

The Hayward Air Rally, the longest continually-held proficiency flying event in North America, is funding three scholarships for students ages 16- 18 for the Experimental Aircraft Association’s (EAA) Air Academy’s summer 2012 program.

The Air Academy is located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and is an aviation-oriented in-residence summer camp for students to develop and explore their interest in aviation. This unique summer camp will take their interest in aviation to the next level. The participants explore the world of flight through aviation studies taught by top-notch aviation instructors. Hands-on activities and flight simulation are some of the many exciting experiences that students participate in. The highlight of the camp is a flight in a real airplane. These camps provide the foundation for a lifelong love of aviation as well as the opportunity to create friendships with fellow aviation enthusiasts.

The scholarships are available to students living in and around the cities of:

  • Hayward, CA
  • Redding, CA
  • Bend, OR

This scholarship will cover the costs of camp tuition and roundtrip commercial air transportation. One applicant will be selected through a competitive screening process, for each of the three application cities. Scholarship application materials can be downloaded here.

The dates for the Basic Air Academy are June 18 – 23, June 25 - 30, and August 6 - 11, 2012.

About the Hayward Air Rally: The annual Air Rally is staged by the Hayward Air Rally, Inc., a not- for-profit California public benefit corporation, a charitable organization with IRS 501(c3) status. Originally conceived by the City of Hayward’s Mayor in 1964, the Hayward Air Rally’s primary charter is to enhance general aviation safety by encouraging aircraft pilots to stay proficient in basic flight and fuel management techniques. The annual Air Rally will next be conducted in June 2012, originating at the Hayward Executive Airport and continuing over a challenging and competitive route through Redding, CA with an ultimate destination of Bend, OR.

What is the EAA Air Academy?

Each summer, the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Air Academy offers high school students an opportunity to go to Oshkosh, Wisconsin and learn all about aviation.

The EAA Air Academy is a unique summer camp that takes a young interest in aviation to the next level. Participants spend a week at the Air Academy Lodge in Oshkosh, completely immersed in the thrilling world of aviation. Top-notch instructors help to explore the world of flight through aviation studies, hands-on activities, flight simulation and many other exciting experiences. The highlight of the week is a flight in a real airplane! These camps provide the foundation for a lifelong love of aviation as well as the opportunity to create friendships with fellow aviation enthusiasts.

From the moment a student arrives, the sky becomes the goal as a dynamic aviation experience unfolds and close friendships with fellow aviation enthusiasts begin. All camps are conducted at the EAA Leadership Center in Oshkosh, with the residence portion of the program at the impressive Air Academy Lodge.

The EAA Basic Air Academy is a step through the world of aviation. Each "hands-on" activity is developed for the intermediate 14- and 15-year-old during a classroom and media presentation, specialized laboratory activities and aviation-related demonstrations.

The Air Academy Lodge is a 56-bed facility complete with great room, kitchen, dining room, computer room, conference space, flight simulation lab and recreational facilities.

Scholarship Application Process

Eligible applicants: Boys or girls, 14 or 15 years old, by the first day of the camp.

Complete a written application, including essay and references by February 25, 2012. Selection of the winning candidates will be based on the evaluation of application materials and appropriate follow-up by Hayward Air Rally volunteers. The selection of the three scholarship winners will be made by March 1, 2012.

Application Requirements:

Signatures by both applicant and parent or legal guardian are required.

Applications must be complete and legible for consideration.

If selected, a physical exam within the 24 months prior to the camp start date is required.

Upon receipt of the initial application, a packet of information will be sent to you that will include:

  • Permission to Participate
  • Liability Waiver
  • Release and Indemnification
  • Health Form
  • Travel Form
  • Other pertinent information

All applications shall be subject to the Hayward Air Rally Committee selection process.

Applicant Checklist

All applicants must include the following with their application:

  • Completed application (download here), including required signatures.
  • A one page essay describing your aviation experiences and interest, why you want to attend the EAA Air Academy, and what aviation experiences you want to gain from attending the Academy.
  • Copies of the most recent two school periods completed (“report cards”).
  • Two letters of recommendation:
    • One recommendation letter must be prepared by a school official, i.e., counselor, teacher, principal, etc.
    • A second letter from a non-school source: Boy/Girl Scouts, civic activity group, your church or clergy, local business owner if part-time employed, etc.
    • No family members please!

Please note that there is no “required format” for the letter of recommendation. Suggest to your reference that he or she review the Air Academy website, and prepare their own free-form recommendation.
